| Im going to buy my first drumset and dont know what to buy a drumset with 2 mounted toms and 1 floor tom or, 2 floor toms and 1 mounted tom. Which type should i get? I would be playing punk rock like blink 182 stuff and the heaviest i would get would be system of a down(which arent really super heavy) |

I would suggest playing both setups and seeing which works best for you. I grew up on a 4-piece kit, so I have no issues with the distance of a single mounted tom to a floor tom (or pair of floor toms). Others don't like that big space, which is where a standard 5-piece would be more beneficial.
I think that is a more effective approach to which setup will work for you better, rather than picking a setup that would suit more of your music style...the SIZES of the drums, however, may be more of a factor than the setup when considering your new kit.
Good luck with your purchase, and welcome to the forum!! |

| i agree with dbdrumbass as far as a 5pc set. as far as rideing toms get a 11" and 12".you have more surface to hit. besides you can get more of a tuneing range which makes them sound better depending on what kind of heads you use. i would try evans ec2. you might like whats already on the drums. |

| Honestly, if you can afford it, I would suggest both... two mounted toms and two floor toms. This will give you flexibility for later if you ever want them or want different sizes for different projects. |

Great advice! Speaking of, how much money are you thinking about spending? That will determine a lot when trying to offer advice. |

Yeah, I usually just play a four-piece kit, but I bought three mounted toms (8", 10", 12") and two floor toms (14" and 16") because I wanted the finish to match well and I wanted to have plenty of options for future projects. Especially since I play stuff like this:

That's how I roll (tom sizes) and it is nice to have all those options, I must admit!! I'll have to check out the YouTube clip later... |

| I play a 4 pc Hipgig and if I were to add another tom, I would seriously consider a lower pitch tom than my 14" before adding one smaller than my 10". I've been through the cycle of nice kit-big kit-bigger kit-no room for the bigger kit-sold bigger kit-bought smaller kit thing and have really had the most fun discovering the less is more style of playing and pulling more voices out of a 4 pc with technique and skill. So, that being said, I vote for adding the 2nd floor tom. |
