Is noise an issue when you would be practicing? What is your budget?
If you end up going electronic, I've said this before but watch out for the rubber pads on the kits. Your wrists and elbows absorb a lot of shock when the stick hits the pad. I'd recommend the mesh-type heads, like those of the Roland kits.
Oh, and WELCOME TO THE FORUM! There are a few experienced members who have been posting lately, so stick around and learn what you can. |

Welcome! I agree with db on sticking with mesh-type heads if you go electric.
Another thing I agree with db on is that it really does come down to noise issues/budget. I've always thought that an acoustic kit is a lot more fun to play BUT you can't play anytime you want because of neighbors, family members, etc. An electronic kit can be played at any time without bothering anyone else but then the really good ones are expensive. Electronic kits have OTHER advantages too - I find E-Kits easier to practice along with my mp3 player & having an E-Kit is like having 30 different drum-kits built into one with all the various sounds/effects you can mess around with. Plus you can play Tool Cover Songs easier!
I actually have BOTH - I practice on my electronic kit late at night at home and I use my acoustic kit for gigging, recording, and practicing during the day.
IF you have a basement (which is the most sound-absorbing room in any house) with few windows then I recommend the acoustic kit. A good acoustic kit can easily be $500 but I spent $2,500 on my electronic so that's why budget is also important. |

| Agreed. If you CAN get an acoustic kit, I'd suggest that first. |

| hmmm...im buying an electronic kit with rubber pads and i already have issues with my left (ride) hand/arm. Wish i could afford the damn mesh pads! I wonder, are there any sticks made for rubber pads to help with absorbing some of the shock??? |

| They're usually about $11.00 which isn't bad. I don't think its worth it for an acoustic kit where you would eventually break them... but these are perfect for an electronic kit. A friend of mine bought a pair about 6 years ago and I remember trying them out. I felt almost NO vibration whatsoever and it felt great but it just wasn't worth the money to me for acoustic. |

| Hey, glad to see that the gear companies are addressing this issue...I would strongly recommend ordering a pair of these if you are playing on rubber pads. It seemed that my elbows hurt more than my wrists, but it was still pain that I didn't like dealing with... |

| very true. I'm waiting for some of the electric kits' prices to go down, so that I can get one for when I move to a dorm (the time that this event occurs is drawing ever nearer). This way I don't anger my neihbor/roommate. |
The difference between dying in a stupid way and dying naturally is whether or not you're trying to get on youtube. |

| Dude, even the electric kits make noise and vibrate the cheap floors/ceilings of dorms and such. A friend of mine put his electric kit on a piece of ply wood over a 4-inch-thick foam-rubber gymnastics mat and it still drove his suite-mates and neighbors crazy. |

| If you listen very quietly, you can hear me from San Diego, assaulting my keyboard. |

Hahaha...the MOST sound that bleeds through is to the people underneath you. If you can somehow manage to get a place on the first floor then that would be ideal. Depending on how cheap the rooms are built...they CAN bleed through to next door dorm neighbors too but you can hang carpeting on your walls & possibly add some rubber to cover the gap under the door to help.
The suite-mates would be the biggest problem for you, but maybe you can work out a schedule with them or try to arrange for one of those "personal" dorms...which are usually hard to get.
Either way...good luck! |

| If you college has a music department, just take lessons from the percussion teacher and they'll give you access (keys) to the practice rooms. :-) |
