| It's hard to specify one particular band- I currently only practice songs that I'd like to play with a band- and the artists whose songs I practice only have one song each that I want to play with a band- so far, anyway. They range from older artists such as the Rolling Stones ("Ruby Tuesday"), the Jimi Hendrix Experience ("Purple Haze") and Deep Purple ("Smoke On The Water") to newer artists, such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Soul To Squeeze"), Jennifer Paige ("Crush"), and Guided By Voices ("Hold On Hope"). The songs in parentheses are songs that I hope to play with a band. |
I use Slingerland drums, Evans drum heads, and Sabian cymbals. It's the creepybutcool kind of thing. |

| I've been using the Tommy Igoe Groove Essentials DVDs for the past year and I've been seeing great results. When I'm just jamming out, I like Frank Zappa, Rush, Tool, Dave Matthews' Band and a few others. |

| Those are all good choices. I'd also like to add that I've been practicing to Iron and Wine, because most of their songs are aucoustic and they don't have drum tracks. I love hippie music |

| I've practiced more to Tool than any other band, especially since I was actually in a Tool Cover Band for several years. I spend 95% of my practice on technique and/or original ideas but once in a while I'll practice along to band for fun....bands like Lamb of God, Soilwork, Mudvayne (Older Mudvayne, not a fan of newer Mudvayne), Opeth, and Textures. |

I think they've always had the same line-up but I meant their older albums as in L.D. 50 or The End Of All Things To Come. Now that I think of it, I like most of the Lost and Found album too but never practice to it. I strongly dislike anything they've written since Lost and Found so I would never practice to it. |

haha thanks! i guess u can say they are alternative. but the drummer is solid. their new album(you cant take it with you) there is also alot of syncopation and odd time signatures. but their older album (self-titled) is alot more fun to play to.
tell me what you think when you check them out |

I haven't sat down and jammed with a CD in a LONG time. However, thinking back through here were some staples that I used to run through to warm up (remember, I played metal for a while so my strength and stamina had to be WAY different than it is now):
First and foremost, I had to be able to play Megadeth's "Rust In Peace" from start to finish w/o any issues. That included mistakes, as well as drifting from the timing or even feeling fatigued. When I was done with the last parts of the song "Polaris" I didn't want to be out of breath. If you haven't listened to that album, Nick Menza unleashed some serious HOT FURY on that sucker. Even if you aren't a fan of that music, just listen to the different arrangements of the music. Dave Mustaine was kicking his serious heroine addiction at that moment, so he was writing some interesting music and being VERY demanding of his band members (Nick Menza on drums and Marty Friedman on guitar...this was their first recorded album with Megadeth and in my opinion is their best work).
Secondly, when Dream Theater's "Images and Words" hit the shelves I was completely blown away. It was like rock and jazz mixed together in a progressive rock format. Not another Rush rip-off in the least. So the song "Metropolis: Part 1" was another song that just blew me away and I had to learn. I must admit that every couple months I'll dial that song up in my iPod and see if I can make it through. There's a spot in the middle that's pretty hairy, FYI!!
Thirdly, since I was a very young drummer when I was getting started I happened to have an uncle who LOVED Rush. He always told me "if you can play like Neil Peart, you can play anything". That slightly varied from what my drum teacher always taught me: "if you can play jazz, you can play anything". But, either way, I grew up studying (on my own...through albums/tapes that my uncle used to let me borrow) all sorts of Rush songs. So I always made sure I got plenty of "Neil Peart" in me. Speaking of him, I just got his book "Ghost Rider"...been wanting to get some time to sit down and read it.
And then there's all the Steve Gadd stuff, the Buddy Rich stuff, can't have too much David Garabaldi (Tower of Power, check out songs like "So I Got To Groove" and "Maybe It'll Rub Off"...now THAT'S some funky drumming), and...

I haven't gotten into any of the pre-90's rock when I played, but those sound like things I should look into. I'm right now working on playing guitar and singing with my current band and practicing to build up to play marimbas (I'm sure Mr. Marimba can kick my ass at that, right now) so playing kit isn't as much what I've been practicing.
As for Steve Gadd and Buddy Rich: OH MY GOD. 'Nuff said. |

| i like to start with moving pictures, especially the first 3 tracks. great warm-up. tool is always fun. when i first started playing drumset at home (back in ninety......five?) i played a lot to green day, stone temple pilots, foo fighters, and a ton of soundgarden. anymore i like putting in something with simpler drums and do whatever i want over it. "time" and "great gig in the sky" by pink floyd are completely awesome to just rip over top of. trying to dynamically match the vocal soloist in great gig is a great exercise. yay drums. |
